3D Halloween Sculpt Off

Last Tuesday, we spent about an hour and a half in class have a spooky themed sculpt off. When we were finished our professor had the entire cohort and faculty vote for their top 6 favorites and my spooky bird tied for second place!

It was a lot of fun and was great practice in Zbrush.

2D Week 8: Group Project (Artist Discovery) - Team Tinman

For this week we are working on a class wide project to redesign the Wizard of Oz. We were broken into four teams of six with a team lead for each team as decided by the class. My team is redesigning the Tinman and the Wizard of Oz to the style of Tim Buron.

Team Members:
Will Perez-Valines
Boo Roseman
Kay Ghering
Yan Chen
Connor Hollis

Pinterest: Team Tinman

After our first discussion everyone on our team spent a couple of days gathering pins that they were interested in and placed them into a "Dump" board on Pinterest. We then all got together as a team and went through the Dump board and filtered them into different categories that better refined the style we were looking for. We spent a lot of time in this meeting establishing the look of our character, colors, environment, and mood.

After we did that we then gave each member two categories to discuss in more detail. I created this layout and gave them to my team and the rest of the class to use as a base for their images. Paul Salas found the fonts for us all to use.

This is the base layout for us to use:

3D Personal Project: Stylized Axe WIP

This past weekend was Hurricane Matthew, meaning classes and campus was closed until Monday...this basically meant a long weekend. I took advantage of that to work on a some personal projects to familiarize myself better with Zbrush and Substance Painter.

I decided to create a stylized axe and used a DT series for guidance.

Here's my current WIP, but I plan on going back and properly retopologizing it in Maya and possibly redoing the textures to look more stylized.

I also want to go back and rebake the model to get the nicks in the blade from my Zbrush sculpt, then export the final model and bring it into UE4.

Honestly this was so much fun to do, I really enjoyed detailing the axe blade and the wooden bits, I learned a lot, and I can't wait to do more stuff like this.

2D Assignment 7: Basic Lighting

This week we had to take an object of our choice, photograph it using 3 point lighting, and then paint it.

Here's my reference photograph:

My painted version:

This assignment took me about 2 hours.

3D Assignment 7: Baking Maps and Digital Painting for a Prop

We took our model from last week and brought that into Substance Painter to bake out maps and to texture our model.

Here's the final model rendered out from Substance Painter and composited in Photoshop:

2D Assignment 6: Value

For this week we practiced value by looking at Dota 2's Character Art Guide.

From there we took line art by the artist Matt Rhodes (who's an inspiration of mine) and took what we knew of value to paint the piece in any style we choose.

I spent about an 1.5 hours on this.

3D Assignment 6: UV and Digital Sculpting for a Prop

This week we took the cannon from our last assignment and created UV's for it in Maya, created a high res version of the canon, and then brought that into Zbrush for detailing.

The cannon with the UV layout:

I spent about an hour UV'ing, and about 1-1.5 hours detailing.
